Pat and I are still enjoying the same neighborhood in Birmingham where we settled almost 46 years ago. Our three children had different ideas, however, and have settled far and wide. My daughter is on Coronado Island with two wonderful children and our oldest son is in Jacksonville, Florida with our other two equally spectacular grands. My second son lives in Washington, D.C. but will move back to Europe this fall. Therefore, my motto is “have little black suitcase and will travel!”
After leaving Oak Ridge in 1966, most people I met asked where I grew up. I guess I didn’t quite sound like I was from Alabama! At that point in time, I came to the realization that I had been very lucky and had grown up in Utopia. As children, our mothers ushered us out the back door in the morning and knew we would be home when we got hungry. We went barefoot all summer and could hardly get our feet into shoes when school started in the fall. It wasn’t a matter of whether you stepped on a honey bee, but how many times. We skated up and down the hilly sidewalks and later rode our bikes everywhere. Does anyone remember skates that required keys? Or that we were often covered with scrapes and bruises? Dr. Hardy made house calls. We got to swim in the biggest pool anyone had ever seen. Our Girl Scout troop maintained a 100% record for torrential rains on camping trips. How many people have you met that walked to elementary school? We enjoyed all the special programs the city had to offer whether at the public library, the Playhouse, or all-day summer programs at the local elementary schools. The whole town turned out for high school sporting and cultural events. What fun we had with such very special people!
I want thank the reunion committee for all their hard work with a very special thank you to Nancy Snowden for the many hours it required to post our pictures and bios. I have enjoyed reading them all!
