Additional: 1966-1968 Attend UTK to study Physics. It's great to learn 'the rules of the universe' to invent things. Do work-study as a draftsman, and as a Physics lab assistant.
1968-1972 Join US Navy, become a nuclear Machinist Mate on missile submarines. Sail all over the Pacific, Atlantic, & Mediterranean. But fall in love with home port, Charleston, SC.
1972-1978 Work in Charleston, SC. Overhaul Navy ships, do mechanical, electrical, non-destructive testing (ultra sound, dye penetrates, X-ray & magnetic flux) technical drawings, inspection of overhaul work & purchasing agent.
1978-Dec. 1981 Work in Greenville, SC. Draftsman for Union Carbide & later head of drafting for Booth Electro. Draw electrical & mechanical machines & illustrations.
Jan. 1982-June 1988 Attend UTK to study Physics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science & Mechanics. Work study: Index abstracts for science textbooks & articles.
June 25, 1983 Marry Caroline Archer.
Jan. 1986 Move from the married students apartments to a rented three level four bedroom house. We fill all four bedrooms by the time we move out in 1995.
Aug. 13, 1986 First child born, Charlotte Ann Combs.
Feb. 24, 1988 Second child born, David Matthew Combs.
June 1988 Graduate with 3 BS Engineering degrees & a minor in Math.
1988-1990 Work for Phelps Engineering, Knoxville, TN. Design, drafting, & production of electrical & mechanical machines.
Jan. 1990-Dec. 1991 Two years Graduate work on a Masters degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering on assistantship doing research in electrical laboratory.
May 29, 1992 Third child born, Rebecca Michelle Combs.
1992 Study Computer Aided Drafting to do own engineering drawings.
1994-2009 General Engineer for Phelps Engineering, Knoxville, TN. Design, draw, machine parts, wire devices, do bills of materials, assemble & test machines.
1995 Buy a three level four bedroom house. Finally, we own a home & have lots of room for everything on a wooded acre. We are only a few houses from a recreation center that has a pool, picnic shelters, walking/bicycle trails, fields, & tennis courts. And it's within walking distance of some stores.
2009 Retire: It's time to stop doing what's needed (though enjoyable) in favor of what's only wanted.
2009 Charlotte graduates with a BS in International Studies. She is interested in the world.
2015 David graduates with a BS in Computer Science. He likes and is good at using computers.
2015 Rebecca graduates with a BS in Pre Vet. She loves helping animals.
