Wakeland Dr Mort 3 2016
Began playing football at Jefferson Junior High, by the football field. Mom thought I should take dancing lessons and so enrolled me in “Arthur Murry” It was hell having to leave football practice early on some afternoons with all the boys shouting have fun with the girls. Actually I discovered those girls were pretty soft and smelled darn better than boys in a locker room – laugh!!! As I recall in 9th grade we won the city championship from Robertsville who I think had dominated the football field for a number of years. Eat your hearts out Robetsvillians!

It was then I develop my friendship with Benny Snyder, who remained a close friend and fellow football player through high school.

From Jefferson Junior High School (JJHS) it was on to the domicile of hugeness, Oak Ridge High School (ORHS). I was scared to absolute death.

ORHS (1963 – 1966)

What can I say! We were told way back then, at least I was, these would be our most fun years and I don’t think any of us gave it a second thought. But ya know something, in hind sight, those words have come to ring so true. At least for me, I relish all the friends I made, relationships I had, and all the fun times for those 3 super stupendous years.

Nothing to worry about except money for gas and money for a date, or beer – laugh, and if time was left over, homework.

Being a part of the ORHS football legacy helped shape me into the self-confident person I am today. I can still hear the sound of all our cleats as we gingerly walked down those long concrete steps at JJHS to the football field below. Even to this day I can remember the aroma of popcorn diffusing through the cool fall air. Normally, I was one of the last one out of the locker room, for I wanted to insure my bladder was empty. Nothing worse than having to play a contact sport on a full bladder, get hit just right, and something was gonna come out – laugh!!

My last year at ORHS I dated a cute lil petite blond, I think a freshman? Wonder what ever happened to Pat? I know Robb Unger gave her the most unbelievable cute nickname of “guppy.” That woman’s lips would rival Angelina Jolie, Brigitte Bardot, Eva Mendes, and Sophia Loren all rolled into one!!! Delicious, simply delicious.

I fondly recall the night after graduation and the party some of us had at Unger’s lake cabin on Watts Bar Lake. We were on top of the world. I so wish the religious nim-wits would have allowed us to graduate on 6/6/66. Even I could remember that!
