Newport News Mitchell Lee Norris of Newport News, Va, passed away on Friday Sept 26,2008, in Hampton Sentara Careplex after a courageous 22 month battle against several forms of cancer.  He was surrounded by the love and caring support of his wife and daughters.

Mitch  was born in Cookeville, Tenn., on Dec 27,1948.  After graduating high school he joined the U. S. Navy, serving 22 years before retiring. At the time of his death he was working for QED Systems in Virginia Beach, VA.

He was preceded in death by his father Roy Duluth Norris.

His granddaughters Katelyn Taylor Manzie, age 7 and Aubrey Laurel Harms, age 4 were the absolute lights of his life.  'Gampie' truly loved and cherished every minute he could spend with them.  He and Katelyn took many walks together on the Mariner's Museum property and around the local neighborhood.  Parks and playgrounds were always to be enjoyed as well as the play set that 'Gampie' and 'Uncle Who' assembled in the backyard for her and Aubrey.  'Gampie' loved reading to his girls and having Katelyn read to him.  Being a long-distance 'Gampie' to Aubrey, he always regretted that he didn't get to spend as much time with her as he wanted.  Thank goodness for telephones.  He will be missed but kept alive to his girls through pictures and shared memories.
