Automobile Accident
An Oak Ridge native and Georgia resident, Theresa Gail Northcutt Bingham, Â died at the scene of an accident that occurred Friday night, Feb. 19, in Sandy Springs, North Fulton County, Ga.
The investigating officer was Corp. R. D. Stewart of the North Fulton County Sheriff's Department.  Stewart reported that Mrs. Bingham, 39, was driving a 1980 Buick Skylark westbound on Johnson Ferry Road near Harbor Drive when her car crossed the yellow center line and crashed head on into a Ford  pickup truck going in the opposite direction.
Mrs. Bingham, who was alone in the car, died at the scene of the accident. Â The driver of the truck was taken by ambulance to Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
At the time of her death she was residing at 1843 Jacksons Creek Drive, Marietta, Ga., in the Roswell Community. Â She was a kindergarten teacher at East Valley Elementary School in Marietta.
Mrs. Bingham attended Pine Valley and Cedar Hill Elementary Schools and Jefferson Junior High School. Â She graduated in 1966 from Oak Ridge High School where she was a member of the Swankette Club and was named Altrusa Girl of the Month during that year.
During the summers, while in high school, she worked as a volunteer at the YWCA, for the canteen service at Carbide Park and for Price Florists.
Following graduation, Mrs. Bingham attended the University of Tennessee and graduated with highest honors, receiving a B.A. Degree in Education. Â She was the recipient of a number of scholarships and a member of Pi Beta Phi.
For several years Mrs. Bingham taught in the Atlanta, Ga. Â school system and later, for two years in Charlottesville, Va., school system before returning to Georgia. Â She was a member of Johnson Ferry Road Baptist Church and had formerly been a member of First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge.
She was the former president of the Vineyard Way Subdivision recreation committee and enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, skiing, bridge and traveling. Â She was an avid sports fan.
She was the daughter of W.T. (Red) Northcutt Jr., Â retired Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant employee and Dot Marlar Northcutt, both of 100 Morningside Drive.
Mrs. Bingham is also survived by her husband, Herman Bingham, district manager for Southern Bell in Atlanta; two children, Michael Wilkinson, in the second grade, and Jennifer Wilkinson, a fifth grader; two stepchildren, Mike Bingham, a high school junior, and Tyler Bingham, in the sixth grade all of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Tommy (a Y-12 Plant employee) and Jamie Palmer Northcutt of Knoxville; a sister, Paula (Mrs. David Beams ) of 101 Verbena Road; and her paternal grandmother, Mamie (Mrs. W. T.) Northcutt Sr. of Corinth, Miss.
In addition, she is survived by a Number of aunts and uncles, including Mrs. Vernell Marlar of Memphis and Joe Northcutt of 108 Victoria Road; a great aunt, Mae Woodruff of Corinth, Miss.; and a number of cousins.
The funeral will be tonight, Â Feb. 22, at 8;30 in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Mahan Archer officiating. Â The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. in Anderson Memorial Gardens.
