OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Charles Morgan Fitzpatrick, age 88, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at his home.
He was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Cookeville, the son of Charles Scott and Hattie Lee Fitzpatrick.
Charles and Willene Fitzpatrick were married in 1943 and had been married for 68 years. He was a World War II veteran and a graduate of Tennessee Tech. After graduation, they moved to Oak Ridge and Charles worked at ORNL as a research engineering technician for 33 years. After retiring, Charles volunteered for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, the Laubach Reading Program, and he tutored students in the Coalfield school systems. He was also a business partner with Roger Derby.
Charles was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he taught a youth group and a youth basketball team, and later in life, became a member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. He was an avid traveler and loved to work in his yard and garden. He also took great pleasure in local wildlife and spending time with his family.
Charles is survived by his wife, Willene Fitzpatrick; four children, Charles Richard Fitzpatrick of Oak Ridge, Donna (Mike) Stallions of Decatur, Ala., Christopher Lee (Jo Ann) Fitzpatrick of Oak Ridge, and Lisa Fitzpatrick of Oak Ridge; his brothers, Jack (Ardelia) Fitzpatrick of Gordonsville, Tenn., Joe (Carlene) Fitzpatrick of Hermitage, Tenn.; his sisters, Jean Apple of Chestnut Mound, Tenn., and Dot Allison of Cookeville; five grandchildren, Michelle and John Stallions of Florida, and Craig and Emily Fitzpatrick and Amy Seiber of Tennessee; and six great-grandchildren, Michael and Mollie McKee, John Charles and Sophia Stallions, and Haley and Devin Cheatham.
A special thank you and note of appreciation to Charles' caretakers, Carolyn Jones, Brenda Martin, Teresa England, Tonya Aslinger, and Sandra Myers, for the wonderful friendship, care and love they've offered under their care.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 4, 2011, at Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, 451 East Tennessee Ave., Oak Ridge. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by the service at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Don Morris, pastor of Kern, officiating. The ashes will be scattered in the church garden following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge, 320 Robertsville Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
