OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Betty Jane Dorough Chilton, 89, of Oak Ridge, passed away at her home on May 15, 2011.
She was born in Columbus, Ga., on May 19, 1922, to parents, Roland Emmett Dorough and Viola McLemore Dorough.
Mrs. Chilton retired from Oak Ridge schools as a teacher, having taught at Robertsville and Jefferson Junior High, as well as having worked at the Science Center of Oak Ridge and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Betty Jane was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild at St. Stephen's for 60 years. She was an avid reader, gardener, and seamstress, as well as a small plane pilot. She drove for FISH and Contact, was a member of the American Association of University Women. Betty Jane was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and a world traveler.
Survivors include her daughters, Virginia Jane Chilton of Zuni Mountains, N.M., Elizabeth Chilton Gryder of Dayton, Tenn., and Carol Reeder Chilton, of Greeneville, Tenn.; sister, Jo Dorough Brooks of Florida; grandchildren, Marina Bean and Jesse Baldwin of Albuquerque, N.M., Joe Gryder of Annapolis, Md., Lorilei Gryder Dreibelbis of Front Royal, Va., Heather Chilton Boegemann and Ryan Chilton, of Greeneville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Dora Bean, Mansi Boegemann, Eli and Helena Gryder, J.T. and Belle Dreibelbis; and two nieces and four nephews.
The family requests that memorials be in the form of donations to "Autism Speaks" in memory of Betty Chilton, Attn.: Kathy Streng, 7900-D Stevens Mill Rd, No. 182, Matthews, NC 28104.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Craig M. Kallio officiating. Interment will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Weatherford Mortuary. An online guest book may be signed at weatherfordmortuary.com.
