10-14-2014 - Mother of Kathy Hibbs Buckingham Mary Jane Hibbs dies

Mary Jane Aland Hibbs died peacefully Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, surrounded by her family.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa. as one of the 11 children of Joseph Paul and Marguerite Aland, Mary Jane attended Villa Maria College and Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon), where she studied analytical chemistry. She moved to Oak Ridge in 1943 to run the analytical chemistry lab as part of the Manhattan Project. There, Mary Jane met her husband, Roger, also a chemist, and thus began her second career as a wife and mother of eight children.

Mary Jane loved learning new things, which inspired her children to use their gifts to achieve their dreams. Her rare free time was spent volunteering for AFS, United Nations, Camp Fire Girls, St. Mary’s Hospice, St. Mary’s Ministry of the Sick, and pursuing her art, painting water colors. She loved life and spending time with friends and family, from swimming and water skiing (into her 70s!) to nurturing her wildflower garden and winning lots of pennies playing bridge.

Mary Jane helped start the women’s investment club in Oak Ridge, but equally loved snorkeling coral reefs, introducing her kids to nature and traveling throughout the Caribbean and the rest of the world. She also invited the world into her home as she hosted AFS and other exchange students and frequent international visitors. She loved people and made friends wherever she went.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Roger, and three of their children, Margaret S. Hibbs, M.D., David J. Hibbs, and Daniel A. Hibbs.

She is survived by her children, Roger F. Hibbs, Jr., Kathryn Hibbs Buckingham and her husband, John, Caroline Hibbs Stradley and her husband, Scott, Joanne M. Hibbs, DVM, and her husband Arthur Fowler, Mary Beth Hibbs Sutton and her husband, Michael, her daughter-in-law, LeEllen Hibbs, and her AFS daughter, Naoko Funabashi, and her husband, Nobuo. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Angela Buckingham Melton and her husband, Mark, Mark Buckingham and his wife, Jenny, and Lisa Buckingham, M.D., Aaron Hibbs, Mary, Theresa, and John Hibbs, Eric and Justin Stradley, Courtney Hibbs, Matthew and Katie Sutton and her AFS grandson, Taro Funabashi, as well as seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Woods and Fr. Chris Michelson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oak Ridge at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities
