Roy Albert (Butch) Shelton, Jr., age 67, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Butch had waged a valiant fight against cancer for the last year, maintaining a positive spirit and never giving up. Butch was born May 6, 1948, in Cleveland, Tenn., the youngest child of Roy and Della Knight Shelton, who preceded him in death. His family moved to Oak Ridge when Butch was a child and he graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1966. Butch played baseball for ORHS and was a Wildcat for Life! He served in the U.S. Army, spending a year in Vietnam as part of the 101st MP Co/101st Airborne Division. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1970, he joined the family business, Shelton Real Estate, in Oak Ridge. In more recent years, he was self-employed in the title business.

Last spring, Butch accepted Christ into his life, getting baptized in his pool and then faithfully attended services as a member of First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge.

Butch had an immense love and commitment to the Boys & Girls Club of Oak Ridge. As a charter member of the Club, he spent countless hours there during his childhood. This led to a deep and lifelong relationship with Lawrence Hahn, Executive Director Emeritus of the Club. Throughout his life, Butch was one of the Club’s most active contributors as a volunteer worker, coach, and as a member of the Club’s Board of Directors. He served as the Board’s President and led several committees and fundraisers. In 1982, Butch, along with his dear friends Baxter Underwood and Lawrence Hahn, founded the Oak Ridge Boys Club Alumni Association. That organization has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars and volunteer hours to the Club.

Butch was preceded in death by his daughter, Erica Casey Shelton.

He is survived by daughter, Paige Nicole Shelton, and son-in-law Mike Christian of Tulsa, Okla., and daughter, Erin Whitney Shelton Webb, and son-in-law, Brad Webb ,of Oak Ridge; six grandchildren, Caden, Caroline, Olivia, Conlin, Charlotte and Crawford, of Oak Ridge and Tulsa; special friend of 16 years, Dolores Patterson; brother, Dan (Carolyn) Shelton of Oak Ridge; sisters, Bernice (Alan) Wootton of Knoxville, and Patti (Mickey) Branson of Strawberry Plains; several nieces and nephews, and a host of special lifelong friends.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 at his home. Friends are welcome to drop by between 3 and 9 p.m. to share their memories and are encouraged to bring photographs.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge or the Oak Ridge Boys Club Alumni Association.
