02-16-2009 - 60th Anniversary of Opening the Gates

This event changed our history forever and opened up our world for better or for worse.

8:30 AM Ribbon cutting ceremony at Elza Gate

10:30 AM American Museum of Science and Energy-Reminiscing by original Oak Ridgers with stories and photographs

Premier of Keith McDaniel's short film, 'Operation Open Sesame', a historical documentary of the planning and celebration ofmakng Oak Ridge open to the public.

Luncheon Midtown Community Center (Wild Cat Den to us) Bill Landry of The Hartland Series Master of Ceremonies. Cost $20.00

Prior to the opening of the gates in 1949, Oak Rdge was a cloistered community built for the sole purpose of ending the war by developing the atomic bomb.  All roads into the city were guarded by mlitary personnel.

During the sumer of 1948 it was announcedthat the gates would open.  There was a town council meeting where it was put to a vote and voed down 10 to 1.
