Prior to the opening of the gates in 1949, Oak Rdge was a cloistered community built for the sole purpose of ending the war by developing the atomic bomb. All roads into the city were guarded by mlitary personnel.
During the sumer of 1948 it was announcedthat the gates would open. There was a town council meeting where it was put to a vote and voed down 10 to 1.
