2016 Johnsson Richard After ORHS I spent 4 years at Vanderbilt resulting in a B. E. in Electrical Engineering followed by 5 years at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA resulting in a Ph. D. in Computer Science. While in Pittsburg I met and married Nancy Teater in 1973.
At the end of 1975 we moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where we have been ever since. I spent the next 16 years trying to start up a new businesses inside established large companies (8 years at Xerox, 5 years at Digital Equipment, and 3 years at Oracle). I didn't actually see the pattern until later and it explains why none of the efforts were really successful. Then I joined my first boss from Xerox in a new private research company, Interval Research, for 8 years.
I finished up my career with my first real start-up, Data Domain. I was the fifth person in the company and I stayed for 9 years through first product, IPO and finally acquisition by EMC. Two years after the acquisition all of my stock options had vested and I retired at age 63 1/2, when COBRA would cover my health insurance until Medicare. In retirement I've done some consulting and some travelling, but mostly I just enjoy life.
(It happens that I've just applied for a new passport so I'm enclosing a spare passport picture).
