OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — .Paul Rubel, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at the Methodist Medical Center. He was born May 23, 1923, in Queens, N.Y., to Milton L. and Helen W. Rubel.
He came to Oak Ridge to work as an engineer at K-25 in 1950. He later worked in Instruments and Control Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He retired from Martin Marietta in 1988 after 38 years of service, and continued to work as a consultant for several years after. He was a graduate of Steven Institute of Technology, Cornell University, and the Reactor School of Technology.
Mr. Rubel served in the U.S. Army in 1944-45. He was an avid sailor, past commodore of the Concord Yacht Club, and longtime member of IEEE.
Mr. Rubel is survived by Peggy Van Bever Rubel, his wife of 46 years; son, Alan Paul Rubel and his wife, Kristin Eschenfelder, of Madison, Wis.; daughter, Louise Rubel Dikeman and husband, Fred Dikeman, of Atlanta, Ga.; sister-in-law Elizabeth Moore and niece, Carol Moore, both of Mountain View, Calif.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Weatherford Mortuary from 4 to 6 p.m.
The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Oak Ridge Institute of Continued Learning (ORICL), The Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, or Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC) or a charity of the donor's choice.
