Barbara Ferrell, owner of The Ferrell Shop in Historic Jackson Square and Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort vice president, said residents have been bringing donations to her shop to help in the effort to save the Alexander Inn.
The Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort, or ORRE, recently purchased the historic Inn, and the warranty deed for the $353,700 sale was signed Dec. 18.
The two-story hotel, once called The Guest House, sits on three acres of land on Madison Road, and although it is appraised at $520,000, the old hotel had become rundown and vandalized over the past few years.
The public has responded by contributing $7,000 during the past week, Ferrell said Thursday.
'Everything we've heard has been very positive,' she said of the public's response.
Ferrell said residents have been coming by her store and dropping off checks, some for as little as $10, but several for $1,000 or more.
'I had a teenager to send $25 just today,' she said. 'We've gotten several donations of a thousand but the biggest check so far has been for $2,000.'
Ferrell said that although she has heard only positive comments about the revitalization effort, she's sure there are skeptics out there.
'We have a big challenge ahead of us,' she said. Fund-raising efforts are planned for the future, including a concert in Grove Center in March.
Ferrell said residents can check ORRE's Web site for donation information and levels of membership at www.revitalizeoakridge.org. Ferrell said donations may also be mailed to ORRE, in care of The Ferrell Shop, 235 Jackson Square, Oak Ridge TN 37830
