01-15-2010 - 01-14-2010 - Toni Vettel Rainsford 1966 died Jan 4, 2010
RAINSFORD, Toni TONI VETTEL RAINSFORD Toni Vettel Rainsford passed away on January 4, 2010 at her home on the Isle of Palms, S.C, where she lived with her husband Michael P. Leddy. Toni was born on August 25, 1948 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Oak Ridge Chief of Police Charles T. 'Ted' Vettel and Helen Nicely Vettel. She was the eldest of five children, including sisters, Tedi Newman, Tandi Vettel, Clancy Mendoza, and brother, Tim Vettel. Growing up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Toni was a competitive dancer and maintained a lifelong love of music and dancing. After attending the University of Tennessee, Toni became a flight attendant, which led her to new passions for flying and travel. While working part-time packing parachutes at a landing field, Toni met Thomas Benjamin Rainsford, who she married in 1972. Toni and Ben had two children, Mark Thomas 'Todd' Rainsford (Charleston, S.C.) and Neely Rainsford Davis (Edgefield, S.C.). She was a nurturing mother who took great joy and pride in her growing family, including Todd's wife Alicia, Neely's husband Josh, and her grandson Benjamin Wesley Rainsford. At the time of her passing she was eagerly awaiting the birth of two more grandchildren. Because of her sweet spirit, beautiful smile, and love of life, Toni had an intuitive gift of making friends easily and excelled at everything she tried. At various times in her life she was a licensed pilot, scuba diver, renowned international tour guide, gourmet macrobiotic cook, and a successful real estate agent for Harry Norman, Realtors in Atlanta. But in her own heart she was always first and foremost a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, and a friend. In addition to her husband, children, grandchildren and siblings, Toni is survived by three step children, Michael Leddy and his wife Audrey Wood, Danny Leddy, all of whom live in Cashiers, N.C. and Katherine Leddy, who lives in Austin, Texas, as well as countless friends. A memorial service to celebrate Toni's life will be held at noon on Thursday, January 21st at The Buckhead Church on the 3rd floor, located at the corner of Tower Place Rd. and Lenox Dr. in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Beacon Hospice 786 Johnny Dodds Blvd. Mt. Pleasant, S.C. 29464. Published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on January 14, 2010
