He continued work in the New Deal until Army conscription in World War II. Following basic training, he was sent to graduate school at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., in preparation for his transfer to the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge. For over three decades he served as head of the Instrument Department at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant, retiring in 1977. For many years he taught in the adult education night school in Oak Ridge. He served as a Boy Scout leader and was in charge of the Webelo Program for the troop sponsored by the Elks in Oak Ridge. He was known for his numerous catering activities for charity benefits in Oak Ridge. Following retirement, he served as a volunteer for the Oak Ridge Visitor's Bureau, telling the Oak Ridge story to guests and visitors around the world.
With his friend Mendel Maskewitz, he was a volunteer electrician and general repairman for his beloved synagogue, Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge (JCOR.) Always the consummate host, he and his wife were known for entertaining international visitors to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory at their home. For many months, he and his wife operated a Bed and Breakfast in their home in conjunction with the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville.
