03-07-2010 - Helen Dunigan, mother of Tom Dunigan

Posted Feb 24, 2010 @ 07:36 PM
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Helen Veldman Dunigan, 96, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010.
Helen was born and reared in Grand Rapids, Mich. Upon graduation, she accepted a secretarial post at a mission boarding school in Annville, Ky., which was supported by the Dutch Reformed Church, where she was a member. There she met her future husband, Thomas Heber Dunigan, whom she married in 1934.
In 1943, the family moved to Oak Ridge, expecting, like many others, a temporary residence during the war effort. She and her husband were founding members of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, and were active members most of their lives.
Helen was a creative homemaker who brought great flair to all she did. She was an awesome cook, a skilled seamstress who made beautiful clothes for her daughters and herself, and an accomplished pianist.
She was involved in many aspects of the Oak Ridge schools in support of her children and her husband. In later life, her passion was duplicate Bridge. She played duplicate several times a week and traveled to tournaments around the south, eventually achieving Life Master status. She became a director of duplicate games for the Oak Ridge Bridge Association and taught bridge at the Oak Ridge YWCA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Dunigan; and her brother, Russ Veldman of Grand Rapids.
She is survived by a brother, Robert Veldman of Grand Rapids; daughter, Mary Jean Harmon of Murphy, N.C.; and daughter, Pat Postma, and son Tom Dunigan, both of Oak Ridge. Helen has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Donations in memory of Helen may be made to either the United Church, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or the Oak Ridge Public Schools Foundation, MS-22 P.O. Box 117, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in the fellowship hall of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill.
