CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Ward E. Foster, 91, of Charleston, W.Va., formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away, Tuesday, March 2, 2010.
He was born in Boulder, Colo., in 1918, to the late Wesley and Cordea Mae Stevenson Foster and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1941 with a BA degree.
He became a licensed airplane pilot while in school, but was rejected for military service in 1941 for medical reasons.
He was employed by Remington Arms in Denver, Colo., in 1941 until 1944. He was then hired by Tennessee Eastman Corporation in April 1944 to work at the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge, as part of the Manhattan Project, in the role of Capital Assets supervisor. He joined the Union Carbide Nuclear Division in 1947 and worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in various financial management positions before retiring in 1982 after 38 years of service.
Mr. Foster was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for more than 60 years. He became active in serving business and community organizations and was appointed as a commissioner of the first Oak Ridge Public Housing Authority, serving from 1968-1972.
He was a charter member of the Oak Ridge Jaycees in 1947 and also a charter member of Oak Ridge Tuberculosis Society. He was an avid golfer and helped 200 other volunteers build Oak Ridge Country Club golf course in 1947. He became president of the ORCC in 1965, 1966 and 1984 and was club champion in 1966. He became president of the East Tennessee Senior Golf Association in 1991. He shot his age on a regular basis throughout his 70s and 80s.
Mr. Foster was an officer, part time, in Oak Ridge Land Development Cooperation, serving as tresurer and vice president from 1966-1978. He also volunteered as a monitor in the Oak Ridge Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic from 1982-2002. He had a strong interest in income taxes and served as a local AARP coordinator and tax counselor/instructor from 1980-2007.
In the summer of 2009 he and his wife moved to Charleston, W.Va., to be near their son and his family and became active members of the Edgewood Summit community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Dora Mae Foster Hansen, Vera Foster Spurlock and Florence Foster Shade; and two brothers, Burt Foster and Frank Foster.
Mr. Foster is survived by his wife, Mary C. Foster; a son, Dr. Daniel S. Foster, who lives in Charleston, W.Va.; three grandsons, Gregory S. Foster of Charleston, W.Va., Bradley M. Foster of Arlington, Va., and Douglas A. Foster of Silver Spring, Md.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Sumer, Grace, Emily, Brandy, Pearl, Dawn, Lucy, Janie, Brandy and the staff at Edgewood Summit, Charleston, W.Va.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2010, at Weatherford Mortuary and a rosary service will follow at 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Charleston, W.Va., at a later date.
