OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — His portrayal of 'The Killer' has earned former Oliver Springs resident Matthew 'Levi' Kreis a Tony award for being among the best of Broadway.
Levi Kreis accepted the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical at Sunday night's Tony Awards, which were held at Radio City Music Hall in midtown Manhattan. In his acceptance speech, he thanked his church and pastor and his parents -- Oliver Springs residents Ronnie and Connie Kreis -- waving to them in the audience. The couple departed East Tennessee for New York on Friday.
Kreis, who graduated from Mount Pisgah Academy in Oliver Springs, plays singer Jerry Lee Lewis in the hit musical 'Million Dollar Quartet.' The musical is inspired by a 1956 recording session at Sun Records in Memphis by four young musicians -- Lewis, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. The three other featured actors play those legendary performers.
During the Tony Awards broadcast, Kreis also performed songs from the musical, along with his castmates, at times standing  on the piano, sitting atop the piano and playing the keys backwards -- reminiscent of the performer he's portraying.
He also helped kick off the broadcast with a stomping 'Blue Suede Shoes.
Asked afterward if his prize would affect his performance as the rock 'n' roll wild man, Kreis told The Associated Press, 'I hope not. I think the authenticity and purity of a performance has nothing to do with approval.'
The goal of every performer, he said, is 'to get to a point where what comes out of them never has anything to do with that, but always comes from an authentic place. At least, that's my goal.'
Kreis' parents are both retired -- Ronnie from Clinton High School, where he worked as a teacher, and Connie, who worked at the Y-12 plant.
