Oak Ridge High School Class of 1966 - Latest News

07-01-2010 - Eva Walker-Mother of Conner Walker 1966 Belated Obit

October 26, 2009
Eva Lucille Douthit Walker
Submitted

Eva Lucille Douthit Walker passed away peacefully on Oct. 22, 2009, one day past her 91st birthday. Eva was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lula Mae Douthit of Tahoka, Texas; sisters, Gladys Collings of Lubbock, Texas, and Lowell Douthit of El Paso, Texas.
Eva was born in Navarro County, Texas, and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, graduating with a BS in music education. She married Clinton Samuel Walker on June 12, 1940, and became part of a couple whose marriage lasted more than 69 years.
In her early married life, she and Clint moved around the country, finally ending up in the Oak Ridge area in 1954. She was active with First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge, participating in many areas of that community including United Methodist Women Circles and teaching at the church's nursery school for several years. As an active member of the American Association of University Women, she participated in an Investment Club where she formed an association of friends beyond investing money. Eva performed at The Oak Ridge Playhouse, acting and singing as a 'pick-a-little' lady in The Music Man in 1966.
She and Clint lived in Norris, Tenn., for a number of years on a gentleman's ranch with up to five horses at a time. While in Norris, Eva served several terms as president of the Norris Women's Club. Eva became an excellent horsewoman and rode the same Welsh Pony for over 20 years and was riding well into her 70s. She taught all four of her precious grandchildren how to ride on that pony.
Eva was a passionate supporter of Oak Ridge High School football, attending two games this season and grew to be a well-recognized feature in the handicapped section at Blankenship Field on Friday nights.
To Eva there were no strangers, only new friends to be included in the wide circle of love she built for everyone she met. With her, there was always enough -- and more -- love to go around.
In addition to her husband, Clinton, Eva is survived by a brother, William Corbin Douthit, of El Paso, Texas; three children and their spouses, Janice and Barry McLean of Silver Spring, Md., Conner and Brenda Walker of Nashville, Tenn., and Rachel and Steve Klima of Kingston, Tenn.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Flynn McLean and Claudine Gruen of Queens, N.Y., Dr. Melanie McLean and Major Rob Chung of Ashton, Md., Travis Klima and Dr. Kristie Chavez of Hernando, Miss.; and Allison and Will Abernathy of Rutledge, Tenn.; and one great-granddaughter, Meridith McLean Chung of Ashton, Md.
An interment of her ashes will be a private service at the Memorial Garden of the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge. A public celebration of Eva's life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, with the designation of 'music ministries.'
