Grandma Unger's Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

1 1/2 cups all purpse flour
3 cups oatmeal - quick cooking type
1 cup shortening
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, mixture (?)
3/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark not specfied - so choose)
3/4 cup white granulated sugar
1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips (6 oz package) NOTE: may mean
    1/2 package because a full package of chips is 12 oz (?)

2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 2 teaspoons of hot water (faucet not boiling)

Mix/blend the first 7 ingredients, above first dotted line
Mix eggs, vanilla, salt, and baking soda together
Add second mixture to dry (1st) mixture
Drop teaspoon sized  dough onto a greased or no-stick cookie sheet
Bake at 375 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes

UPDATE on cookie recipe from Kathy Unger, Jan 27, 2010
Bottom line as she puts it!!
Cream the shortening with the sugars (use dark brown), eggs, salt, soda, and vanilla.  Then add the flour, oatmeal, nuts and chocolate chips (confirmed - use 1/2 bag of 12 oz).  Everthing else is the same!!
